Chapter 16
Edward Quan ·
Almost without thinking, she nodded.
“Yes.”
“Yes!”
He swept her into his arms and spun her around the square.
“Ji Shu's agreed to be my girlfriend!”
Tourists and passersby applauded.
While everyone else offered their congratulations, one person watched from the shadows.
Ji Shu was in high spirits on the way home.
Then she saw Wen Ran.
Her smile slowly stiffened. Noticing her reaction, Lin Qingyu said, “Shall we take a taxi?”
“Yes.”
She didn't want to speak to Wen Ran. She turned away.
Wen Ran dropped to her knees in front of her.
“Please, Shushu. Let me be with Jiang Zhixu! I even lost my baby because of him, but he still won't stay with me. He insists on coming to Britain for you! Please break up with him. Don't ever see him again. Don't give him another chance!”
“We broke up a long time ago. If he doesn't want to be with you, that's his business. It has nothing to do with me. I don't want to see you, and I don't want to see him. I should be the one telling you both to stay out of my life. The sight of your faces makes me sick.”
She walked away.
Behind her, Wen Ran suddenly seemed to become another person.
She pulled a sharp knife from her bag and lunged at Ji Shu's back.
“If you won't give him back, then die! Once you're dead, he'll be mine forever!”
With a vicious laugh, she rushed forward.
Just as the blade was about to strike Ji Shu's back, someone charged out and shoved Wen Ran to the ground.
She looked up.
Jiang Zhixu.
“What are you doing? Have you lost your mind? You're trying to kill someone!”
He glared at her in disbelief.
Thank God he had been following Ji Shu these past few days. Otherwise, he would never have known Wen Ran had followed him to Britain and planned to hurt her.
“You want to kill me?”
Ji Shu turned and stared at the dagger on the ground, unable to react.
They had been best friends. Whenever Wen Ran had been helpless, Ji Shu had helped her. Without Ji Shu, she might have left school long ago—or been sold off into marriage by some relative.
Everything Wen Ran had today, she owed to Ji Shu.
She had once promised never to forget her kindness.
Now, for a man, she wanted to kill her.
## Chapter 22
“Yes! I want to kill you! Once you're dead, Jiang Zhixu will be mine!”
Wen Ran scrambled up, retrieved the knife, and advanced step by step, her eyes full of hatred.
“Why has your luck always been better than mine? Why are you so beautiful while I'm so ugly? Why do you have parents who love you when mine have been dead for years? Why does he love you and not me? Why!”
Agitated, she tried to rush forward again.
Jiang Zhixu caught her arm.
“Enough. Don't do something you'll regret. Shushu hasn't done anything wrong. We have. We betrayed her. We hurt her, not the other way round. You have no right to hurt her!”
“Is that so?”
She looked at him and laughed.
“Yes. You're right. We're the ones at fault. Ji Shu hasn't done anything wrong.”
“Then let's die together!”
Her eyes turned cold.
Without warning, she drove the knife into Jiang Zhixu's chest.
Warm blood splashed onto her face. For an instant, she froze.
His body stiffened. Slowly, he lowered his head to the knife in his chest, pain spreading across his face.
“Jiang Zhixu!”
Ji Shu covered her mouth, her eyes wide.
“Wen Ran, you're mad! Stop!”
“You owe me this! If we can't be together in life, we'll be together in death!”
She yanked the knife from his chest and plunged it deep into her own heart.
The two people who had once mattered most to Ji Shu collapsed in front of her.
She rushed toward them, frantic.
“Zhixu! Wen Ran!”
“Call an ambulance!”
“Don't be scared. I've already called! We need to give them first aid!”
Lin Qingyu worked alongside her to help them.
But Wen Ran's wound was too deep. Nothing Ji Shu did could save her.
Before she died, she caught Ji Shu's hand.
“I'm… sorry…”
With those words, her last signs of life faded.
