Ji Shu smiled and asked, “Was I supposed to fling myself into your arms and ask what brought you all this way?”
“Or cry and tell you how much I've missed you? That I'd finally waited long enough for you to come?”
Jiang Zhixu frowned.
That was exactly what he had imagined. He was certain he still had a place in her heart.
She must still love him.
“What? Did I guess right?”
She shook her head with a mocking smile.
“Sorry to disappoint you. Seeing you doesn't excite me. It doesn't make me happy. You're just a nuisance.”
She wanted to go inside, but he wouldn't let her.
“You're lying, aren't you? I know you still love me. I admit I was wrong, Shushu. But I've changed. The four years are up. Wen Ran and I have broken up. I'll never go to her again. Never see her again. I'll only be with you. If you want to get married, we can fly home and register right now.”
“What makes you think I'd take you back after that so-called four-year agreement with my best friend? What makes you think I'd still want you?”
“Because you love me.”
He sounded utterly certain.
The more certain he was, the more it hurt.
“Yes. Once, I loved you very much. But that love ended when you betrayed me. When you stood by and watched those people hurt me. When you knew how miserable I was and still insisted on honoring your four-year agreement with Wen Ran. It's gone. For good.”
Ji Shu broke out of his arms.
“Let go. Stop clinging to me. The sight of you makes me sick.”
“Shushu, don't…”
He wouldn't give up. She stared at him and asked one question.
“Have you slept with her?”

The light in Jiang Zhixu's eyes went out.
The hand that had refused to release her slowly loosened.
He said nothing, but his reaction was answer enough.
“So you have. You slept with her, then came here to tell me you wanted to start over?”
To Ji Shu, he seemed rotten from the inside out.
“I wish I'd never been with you. I gave you everything for four years, and this is what I got. I was a fool. Never again.”
She went inside and locked the door without hesitation.
Jiang Zhixu didn't leave. He stood outside all night.
When she emerged the next morning, he followed.
“Shushu.”
“What do you want from me?”
“I want to be with you.”
“Impossible.”
“What do I have to do for another chance? I was wrong. I know I was wrong!”
“Stop following me!”
The university had arranged this apartment for her. Her neighbors were students and lecturers. Seeing her arguing with a man in the street, they all turned to look.
While she struggled to think what to do, a fellow medical student approached.
“Ji Shu.”
He looked at her, then at Jiang Zhixu.
“Need help?”
They were in the same medical school, but they barely knew each other. Both were exchange students. She knew only that his name was Lin Qingyu, he was in her year, and he was well known in their department.
He was exceptionally handsome—the department's heartthrob. She was considered its beauty. People often compared the two of them.
They had even taken the same flight here without exchanging a word.
He had always seemed cold and quiet. She had never expected him to offer help.
“He's harassing me.”
“Shushu—”
Jiang Zhixu frowned, taken aback.
Lin Qingyu stepped between them.
“Jiang Zhixu, right? Move aside, please, or I'll call campus security.”
“Who are you? I'm talking to her. What's it got to do with you?”
Lin Qingyu raised his eyes lazily.
“Helping someone who needs it. Is that a problem?”
“Shushu…”
“Ji Shu, class starts soon. Today's anatomy lecturer isn't known for his patience. Unless you want to be late, we'd better go.”
She nodded quickly. “Right. Let's go.”
She set off, and Lin Qingyu followed with long strides.
Jiang Zhixu wanted to go after them, but his phone rang.
He had no intention of answering when he saw the caller's name. He hung up. It kept ringing. At last, he had to take it.
“Yanan? What is it?”
