Chapter 6: Six Years Loving the Wrong Man

After all, it would be the end of the world if his wife ran away.

“So what are you going to do?”

“Nothing.”

Every so often, Chu Yusen glanced at his watch.

He’d never thought thirty minutes could feel so long.

Secretary Song was such an idiot.

If Qin Sang contacted him to ask for the house password, was he really supposed to wait a full thirty minutes before telling Chu Yusen?

But even after the plane landed, Secretary Song still hadn’t called.

“Sorry, Mr. Chu. Miss Qin still hasn’t contacted me.”

“I know.”

Just as Chu Yusen was about to hang up, he suddenly asked, “What about the ring?”

Secretary Song paused. “You didn’t give me any instructions that day, so I’ve been keeping it.”

“Bring it over.”

Familiar streets slid past the car window.

As they passed a beautiful flower shop, Chu Yusen suddenly told the driver to stop.

At first, he’d planned to send Secretary Song in to buy a bouquet.

But at the last moment, he changed his mind.

“Get me irises.”

He asked the florist to wrap them beautifully.

Qin Sang liked irises.

When the car pulled into the underground parking garage, Secretary Song’s phone suddenly rang.

Chu Yusen immediately looked over.

His fingers tightened around the bouquet.

But Secretary Song quickly hung up and gave an awkward, apologetic smile.

“Sorry, Mr. Chu. It was a spam call.”

Chu Yusen said nothing. He got out of the car with the flowers.

Just before he reached the elevator, his face suddenly turned cold. He turned and walked toward a nearby trash can.

Without a change in expression, he tossed the bouquet inside.

Someone came to clean the house every day.

Everything was neat and spotless, yet for some reason the place felt so empty and cold it was almost painful.

Only one person was missing, but it was as if all the warmth in the world had ceased to have anything to do with him.

He casually took off his coat and tossed it onto the sofa.

Loosening his tie, he poured himself a glass of liquor.

His phone lay on the coffee table beside him.

It kept vibrating from time to time.

But he knew none of the messages were from Qin Sang.

She was stubborn and strong-willed. She couldn’t tolerate even a grain of sand in her eye.

That was why, over the years, whenever he secretly had a little fun on the side, he’d always told everyone to make sure she never found out.

Thunder suddenly rumbled outside the window.

Lightning split the sky.

Chu Yusen abruptly remembered that night.

It might have been the first time he’d told her he needed to return to Beijing to visit his grandfather.

Qin Sang had tugged at his sleeve.

She’d said:

“Chu Yusen, it’s raining.”

“I’m scared.”

As if struck by a thought, he slowly sat upright.

Had Qin Sang already known something was wrong then?

The first time she’d shown any weakness was because she wanted him to stay.

She’d been giving them both one last chance.

But all he could think about then was Jiang Chi.

He’d only wanted to get back to Beijing as quickly as possible.

He’d completely missed the signs that something was wrong with her.

What if he’d noticed?

What if he hadn’t left, and had stayed by her side?

She was most afraid of stormy days.

She’d once told him that her father had died in a traffic accident in weather like that.

On a rainy night, with no one passing by, her father had been badly injured and suffered until he died.

By the time anyone found him, he’d bled out.

She’d told him that she’d accepted his love because, in that torrential rain, seeing him hold a stray dog against his chest had moved her.

She found it hard to open her heart to people, hard to trust and love anyone.

He’d been her first love, the one who’d shared so many firsts with her.

And yet, in the end, he’d still let her down.

Chu Yusen suddenly snatched up his phone.

His fingers automatically tapped out a familiar number, one he knew by heart.

But now, he couldn’t get through.

He called Lu Tingnan instead.

“Do you know Jiang Wutong’s number?”

“How would I know?”

Lu Tingnan sounded confused.

He was going crazy trying to get that number himself!

But Jiang Wutong hated him. She avoided him like the plague.

“Then do you know where Qin Sang is?”

“How would I know?”

Lu Tingnan was even more bewildered.

But Chu Yusen had already hung up.

He grabbed his coat and hurried outside.

He remembered that Qin Sang had an art studio.

He’d always looked down on it a little.

How much money could that little studio possibly make?

One piece of jewelry he casually gave her was enough to buy the whole place.

But when she left, she hadn’t taken any of the jewelry.

She loved beautiful jewelry, just like any other girl.

But she loved her self-respect more.

She could support herself—and do it well.

So she didn’t care about anything he’d given her.

What, then, was left that she couldn’t let go of?

I looked at the guest sitting across from me.

It had been three years since…
