Chapter 3: Six Years Loving the Wrong Man

“Any man who wants that stubborn woman can have her.”

The long shadow on the floor wavered.

The corner of Chu Yusen’s mouth lifted.

He’d bet Qin Sang would storm in within three seconds.

With her forceful temperament, how could she stand being insulted like that?

Sure enough, not three seconds later, someone shoved the half-closed door wide open.

The room fell silent.

Chu Yusen didn’t even bother to look up, but his smile grew more pronounced.

The silence lasted only a second.

“Who is that?”

“Isn’t that Qin Sang?”

“Didn’t Zhou just say he saw Qin Sang?”

“You’re Jiang Wutong, right? Qin Sang’s college roommate?”

Lu Tingnan spoke up, looking at the slender figure outside with a mocking half-smile.

Years ago, Qin Sang had nearly taken him apart because of Jiang Wutong.

He’d sworn he would never let either of those women off the hook.

Back then, Chu Yusen had Qin Sang’s back, and out of respect for their friendship, Lu Tingnan had swallowed his anger.

Now Qin Sang had been driven out, and Jiang Wutong had actually come looking for trouble herself?

Chu Yusen’s expression changed at once.

His arm, which had been around Jiang Chi, tightened abruptly.

Jiang Chi gave a little cry of pain, but Chu Yusen didn’t seem to hear her.

He looked up and stared at Jiang Wutong standing in the doorway.

So it wasn’t Qin Sang.

Qin Sang hadn’t come at all.

Of course. She’d always been so unyielding.

He knew that better than anyone.

When he pursued her, he’d had to swallow plenty of his own pride.

He’d tried every trick he could think of.

That girl had too much self-respect and too much spirit. Neither gentleness nor force could move her.

In the end, he’d truly run out of ideas. He’d even thought about giving up.

The last time they met, he’d decided to be honest with her.

He wouldn’t keep pursuing her or bother her anymore.

He remembered that day clearly. It had been storming.

As he waited for Qin Sang beneath her dorm, he happened to see the stray dog she often fed, huddling miserably and searching for shelter from the rain.

On impulse, he carried the little dog out of the downpour.

Without a second thought, he held it against his chest.

His outrageously expensive coat was ruined.

But when Qin Sang came downstairs and saw him, her expression changed completely.

It was the first time she’d spoken to him so gently.

The first time her eyes had sparkled when she looked at him.

There was none of the usual distaste or impatience.

That was how he finally won Qin Sang over.

When that girl loved someone, she loved him with all the warmth and tenderness in her heart.

For the first two years, Chu Yusen had loved and cherished her just as sincerely.

He’d spoiled her so much he was afraid she’d melt if he held her in his mouth.

He’d truly believed he could love her like that for the rest of his life.

Even now, he’d never thought he would really break up with Qin Sang.

“Yes, I’m Jiang Wutong.”

“I came because I was passing by earlier and heard Qin Sang’s name.”

Chu Yusen’s thoughts snapped back to the present.

He remembered Jiang Wutong. She and Qin Sang had been close.

But he hadn’t seen her since he and Qin Sang left Beijing.

The shy, timid girl who used to hide behind Qin Sang was now much more beautiful—and much braver.

Even her voice had become clear and steady.

There was something of Qin Sang’s old boldness in her.

“Lu Tingnan.”

Jiang Wutong didn’t look at Chu Yusen once.

Instead, she called Lu Tingnan by name.

“Were you the one who just insulted Qin Sang?”

Lu Tingnan smiled with scorn and arrogance.

“Yeah. I was.”

Jiang Wutong said nothing. She walked slowly through the crowd and stopped in front of him.

“What now? Are you going to imitate Qin Sang and kill me?”

Lu Tingnan suddenly found the situation amusing.

Qin Sang was gone, and now Jiang Wutong had appeared.

They really were cut from the same cloth.

But this kind of girl was genuinely alluring—far more interesting than Jiang Chi.

As he was thinking, Jiang Wutong picked up a glass of liquor from the table and threw it straight in his face.

“Your mouth is filthy. Let me disinfect it for you.”

“You bitch!”

Lu Tingnan froze for several seconds before wiping the liquor from his face and raising his hand to strike her.

But Jiang Wutong met his clear gaze without flinching.

A faint, mocking smile even flickered in her eyes.

For some reason, that smile made Lu Tingnan hesitate.

She was clearly frail and had no status to speak of.

It would be as easy to crush her as an ant.

And yet Lu Tingnan couldn’t bring his raised hand down.

Jiang Wutong had already turned away.

“Mr. Chu, I’m sorry for interrupting your gathering.”
