Chapter 2: Six Years Loving the Wrong Man
Chu Yusen’s fingers tightened around his phone.
“Did she leave a message?”
“No. I searched the whole house. Miss Qin didn’t leave a single word.”
Chu Yusen let out an angry laugh.
He thought of what he’d said about Jiang Chi the other day. He should have said it about Qin Sang instead.
She was only acting that way because he indulged her.
For the past few years, he’d left Beijing for her and lived with her in a small third-tier city.
His parents and the elders in his family had never accepted her.
He’d lost count of how many times he’d argued with them.
In the first few years of their relationship, he’d even spent New Year’s Eve with her.
Who was he, after all?
What kind of status did Chu Yusen have?
When had he ever lowered himself or put up with so much?
On the other end of the call, his subordinate was so frightened he barely dared to breathe.
After a long silence, Chu Yusen finally spoke, his voice cold.
“Change the locks.”
This was his territory.
Leaving was easy.
But if she left and then wanted to come back?
She could forget about it.
On the seventh day after returning to Beijing, Chu Yusen was supposed to go back to the city where Qin Sang lived.
But he didn’t.
Qin Sang’s birthday was only five days away.
Their anniversary was five days after that.
She seemed to care about their anniversary even more than her birthday.
Chu Yusen figured she’d come back by then at the latest.
She wouldn’t be able to hold out.
On the twelfth day after returning to Beijing, Chu Yusen felt restless all day for no apparent reason.
A reminder on his calendar caught his eye:
Tangtang’s birthday.
The words irritated him, so he opened the reminder and deleted it.
His friends took him from one drinking party to the next.
He brought Jiang Chi along.
The little thorns she used to have had disappeared completely. She sat beside him, as docile as a porcelain doll.
The party was in full swing when someone suddenly brought up Qin Sang.
“Brother Sâm, are you and Qin Sang really broken up?”
In the past, whenever Chu Yusen returned to Beijing, he never stayed longer than a week.
No matter how beautiful those other women were, Qin Sang had always been the one in his heart.
But things seemed different this time.
Maybe Qin Sang was already in the past.
Chu Yusen didn’t even look up. He held a glass of liquor in one hand and played with Jiang Chi’s long hair with the other.
“We broke up a long time ago.”
“Finally!”
“I’ve been waiting for this day so long I was about to give up!”
Lu Tingnan sprang to his feet, rubbing his hands together in excitement.
“She used to throw her weight around because Brother Sâm had her back. She almost walked all over me.”
“Now that Brother Sâm doesn’t want her anymore, let’s see how arrogant she can be.”
“Let me run into that woman again. I’ll teach her a lesson!”
Quite a few people there had once suffered at Qin Sang’s hands. Their anger quickly spilled over, and one after another joined in.
Jiang Chi looked at them with wide, innocent eyes.
“Who’s Qin Sang? Was she really that awful? It sounds like everyone hates her.”
“She was the worst—a downright vicious woman!”
“Little sister, don’t you ever imitate her. You won’t end well if you do, understand?”
Jiang Chi obediently leaned against Chu Yusen.
“I’m the good one now, right, Chu Yusen?”
Chu Yusen lowered his eyes and saw the ingratiating obedience in her gaze.
She was doing her best to hide it, but he could still see through her.
He’d seen that look far too many times growing up.
He hated it.
Just as he reached out to push Jiang Chi away, someone suddenly shoved open the private room door.
“Hey, guess who I just saw?”
“Who? Why are you making such a fuss—”
“Qin Sang! She just walked past. I’d recognize that arrogant air even if she were ashes!”
“Damn it, what’s she doing here?”
“Brother Sâm, is she still clinging to you? Did she come here to pester you?”
“I knew she wouldn’t just sit still. She must’ve been waiting for today so she could make a scene!”
“Brother Sâm, if she comes begging to make up, you won’t give in, will you?”
The young playboys suddenly lost half their swagger.
After all, who hadn’t seen how Chu Yusen used to dote on Qin Sang?
Who could say what Chu Yusen was thinking now?
The hand he’d been about to use to push Jiang Chi away came to rest on her cheek instead.
He pinched her soft cheek and lifted his eyes, unconcerned.
His gaze drifted toward the half-open door.
A figure was just barely visible outside.
It had to be Qin Sang.
He’d expected that with her temper, she would at least wait another five days.
He hadn’t thought she’d lose patience so soon.
The thought lifted more than half the irritation that had been nagging at him all day.
He leaned back in his chair, relaxing. His voice rose a little, his manner lazy.
“No. These days, I like someone sweet and obedient like Chi Chi.”
