Chapter 5
Edward Quan ·
In the dining room, a thermal container of freshly prepared nutritious food was waiting.
A sticky note had been placed on top:
[Eat it when you wake up. If it’s past ten, throw it away and I’ll have someone bring fresh food. Remember to take your folic acid first. No cold drinks.]
It was Chen Yiyue’s handwriting.
He was handsome, and his handwriting was beautiful too.
I huffed and went to brush my teeth and wash up. The bathroom had been fitted with nonslip mats everywhere. Even the toilet seat had been changed to the pinkish blue I liked.
That bastard… could be thoughtful, after all.
I proudly stomped on the nonslip mat. In the mirror, the corner of my mouth lifted into a smile I didn’t even notice.
Maybe because Chen Yiyue took such good care of me, I hadn’t felt unwell at all during the first three months of pregnancy. I hadn’t had a single bout of morning sickness.
Our marriage was being kept secret, but my family knew about it.
Not only did my mother call three times a day, but even my arrogant half-brother finally lowered himself enough to ask to see me.
I knew what they wanted.
Chen Yiyue was the eldest son of one of the most powerful wealthy families in Beijing and Hong Kong. His background and status were so formidable that no one could compare.
Of course I wasn’t going to avoid the issue. I made proper use of that advantage and negotiated with my father.
He didn’t know our marriage was only contractual. To curry favor with Chen Yiyue, he gave me a large number of shares in the Zhang family company.
I happily accepted them without a moment’s hesitation.
I also took the opportunity to “shake down” my father for a few houses and some antique calligraphy and paintings.
All in the name of showing Chen Yiyue how sincere the Zhang family was.
I felt just a tiny bit guilty for taking advantage of Chen Yiyue like that.
Of course, only a tiny bit.
After all, every day my hands were sore, my mouth was tired, and my breasts ached. That bastard had taken plenty of liberties with me.
I strongly suspected that he’d married me because he lusted after my looks—or maybe he had some strange fetish for pregnant women. Ahem…
I rubbed my belly and muttered to myself.
Baby, your biological father may be a bit of a bastard, but he does take good care of us.
Should I give him a little reward?
I sent Chen Yiyue a message on WeChat:
[Chen Gou Dan, I want to design a new shirt for you myself. Send me your measurements~]
Chen Yiyue replied immediately: [25.79 cm.]
Me: ?
Me: [Are you a pervert?! I didn’t mean that measurement!]
Chen Yiyue: [Width: 8 cm. Current color and condition can be photographed and sent. If Your Lady Wife requires it, please reply 1.]
I was so mad I couldn’t help scolding him:
[You expect me to believe that? I bet you’re only one millimeter!]
9
Although I paid dearly over the next month for that “one millimeter” wisecrack, I finally finished sewing the shirt.
I drew the design and cut and stitched it myself.
I planned to give it to him at Chen Yiyue’s birthday party tonight.
But when I carried the gift bag into the private room at the club, I found the atmosphere strange.
Chen Yiyue sat on the sofa, swirling a glass in his hand, looking displeased.
“What’s wrong with you…?”
I hadn’t finished speaking when I noticed the beautiful woman sitting beside him.
Fu Mian.
She’d been Chen Yiyue’s and my classmate in high school—and the only girl he was rumored to have written a love letter to, the one everyone called his moonlight.
That night when he was drunk… the “Yumian” he’d called out must have been her.
No wonder I’d said the bastard seemed in a bad mood tonight. He was lovesick.
That bastard finally got a taste of his own medicine!
I should have been delighted. But for some reason, even though I was hungry, I suddenly lost my appetite.
I sat in a corner, hiding the gift bag with the shirt behind my back.
I shouldn’t have made him that shirt. Why had I stayed up late embroidering it? I was so stupid…
Zhang Yumian, had you lost your mind?
As expected, Chen Yiyue wasn’t affectionate with me as usual. He even messaged me on WeChat:
[Something’s come up these past few days. Don’t sit over here for now. Leave early later; I’ll have the driver take you home.]
Oh.
Fine. I wouldn’t sit with him. As if I wanted to sit beside him anyway.
I sniffled, planning to stay a little longer and then slip away.
But when it rains, it pours.
A rich young master arrived with a woman. He must have had too much to drink, because he began slurring as he gossiped.
“That Hao Yuan, the third son of the Hao family, even offered to pay me to have a boy for him. I took his sperm to get IVF. It was so ridiculous—guess what happened?
“Hao Yuan’s sperm was completely useless! The doctor said he had a congenital genetic defect. He could never get a woman pregnant in his life…”
The next second, the whole table burst into laughter.
