Chapter 2
Edward Quan ·
Wait, what gave him the right to be angry?
Even if we’d been sworn enemies since childhood, mocking me now was still unbelievably low.
I bit down hard on my lower lip and snapped back, “What do you mean I got dumped? I dumped him!”
Chen Yiyue sneered. “Oh? Then why are you crying?”
“I… I’m crying tears of joy, all right?”
Chen Yiyue said nothing more.
I thought he’d had his laugh and would leave.
But after a long silence, he spoke again.
“What are you going to do about the baby?”
The answer nearly slipped out before I could stop it. “I want to keep it.”
Actually, when I’d been on the phone with my mother just now, I’d argued and cried, completely falling apart.
But deep down, I hadn’t been surprised. I’d even had a strong feeling this would happen.
If I didn’t abort the baby and go home to marry someone this time, my mother would really abandon me. I was no longer useful to her.
Someone who had never been loved learned to be frighteningly rational.
This baby… might be the only family I had left.
“Keep it?”
Chen Yiyue let out a cold laugh, his voice edged with undisguised sarcasm.
“Zhang Yumian, do you like that naked muscleman so much? Even now, you still want to keep his baby?
“How did I never realize you were the lovesick type?”
See? He’d only come to watch me make a fool of myself.
What a bastard!
I didn’t want him to see me looking so pathetic and vulnerable. I turned away, stood up, and walked off.

As it turned out, I’d still overestimated my mother’s love for me.
I’d planned to go home and collect my personal belongings.
But the villa’s front gate wouldn’t even let me in. My suitcase was thrown straight outside.
Expressionless, I crouched down, stuffed my damp, dirty clothes into the suitcase, and turned to leave.
I hadn’t gone far when the rain grew heavier and the sky turned frighteningly dark.
Drenched and shivering, I hurriedly searched for somewhere to shelter.
Suddenly, blinding headlights flashed. A black car pulled up right in front of me.
The window rolled down. There was Chen Yiyue’s outrageously handsome face again.
One hand rested on the steering wheel. His gaze fell on me, then flicked to the suitcase I was dragging.
I instinctively hid it behind my back and put on a brave face. “…What a coincidence. I was just about to go on a trip.”
Chen Yiyue said nothing.
He simply opened the door and got out.
As he came closer, I grew awkward and backed away, murmuring weakly, “Chen Yiyue, don’t come over here just to laugh at me. I really don’t have the energy to fight with you today… Just leave me alone…”
I hadn’t even finished speaking.
My exhausted body suddenly lifted off the ground.
Chen Yiyue effortlessly scooped me up in his arms and hooked my suitcase with his other arm.
“Zhang Yumian, you say you want to keep the baby, and then you stand out here in the rain?”
“Are you an idiot?”
He was insulting me again…
Chen Yiyue placed me in the back seat, wiped my hair and face with a towel, then turned the car’s heater up to the maximum.
My head was spinning. I meant to say something, but soon I leaned back and fell asleep.
When I woke up, I was lying in Chen Yiyue’s bed.
Two thick fleece blankets were piled over me.
My legs had been wrapped in another blanket, too.
…No wonder I’d woken up overheated.
I heard noises coming from the kitchen. Chen Yiyue was making congee.
When I walked out, he strode over on his long legs and pressed his palm to my forehead.
“You don’t have a fever. Does anything feel wrong?”
I shook my head.
He pulled out a chair for me. “Eat some congee first. Then take a hot shower.”
“…Okay.”
I was starving. I didn’t even bother asking why he’d suddenly turned so nice. I picked up the bowl and slurped it down.
“Slow down. No one’s going to steal it from you, you little dummy.”
Chen Yiyue sat across from me and reached out to brush a grain of rice from the corner of my mouth.
I slapped his hand away and glared at him with puffed-out cheeks. “You’re insulting me again!”
“Good. You’ve eaten, you’ve got your strength back, and now you can glare at people again.”
Chen Yiyue gave a roguish laugh and pulled out a cigarette to light. Then he seemed to remember something and tossed the entire pack into the trash.
I stared at him, unusually shy around him.
“It’s fine. You can smoke. I’ll leave in a little while…”
Chen Yiyue slid my phone toward me and said casually, “While you were asleep, I put it on silent. Here—these are all messages and calls from your mother.”
Apparently, he’d seen every one of those cruel messages pressuring me to marry.
How humiliating!
I snatched my phone and hid it under my butt, pretending I was dead.
But fate turned quickly. Within minutes, Chen Yiyue’s phone rang too.
“You little brat, you dare ignore my calls? Where’s my granddaughter-in-law? Bring her here right now! What use was it raising you if you can’t even…”
“Grandpa, I’m busy making love to your granddaughter-in-law. I’ll hang up.”
Chen Yiyue said it with a lazy, shameless air, then hung up.
