Chapter 5

With clean mineral water to drink, the clients finally calmed a little.
The chairman wiped his forehead and hurried over.
“Thank goodness for you today, Mr. Chen.”
“I’ll have finance transfer fifty thousand immediately.”
I waved.
“The money can wait.”
“I didn’t come only to sell water.”
“I came to get justice for my crew.”
I took out yesterday’s settlement invoice and slapped it against his chest.
“To force us out, Lin Tingting made us relay jugs up thirty-six floors by the stairs.”
“My men nearly collapsed in that stairwell.”
“She also falsified a test report and pushed a system that failed water standards.”
“Shenghao owes us an explanation.”

Studying the invoice, the chairman’s face changed from red to white.
“Lin Tingting!”
“Get over here!”
Trembling, she limped over despite her painful foot.
“Let me explain, Chairman.”
“He’s framing me!”
“This deliveryman is deliberately extorting our company!”
She reached to snatch the invoice.
I caught her wrist.
“Your own signature, there in writing, and you call it a frame-up?”
“Do you think everyone here is blind?”
She burst into tears.
“Deputy Manager Zhao! Cousin! Say something!”
“I only wanted to save the company money!”
Seeing the fire nearing him, Zhao Gang immediately turned on her.
“Shut up!”
“When did I tell you to force them up the stairs?”
“You falsified that water report yourself. Nothing to do with me!”
She stared at him in disbelief.
“You’re throwing me away, Zhao Gang?”
“You said the purification system was profitable. You told me to get a fake report!”
He went pale and slapped her.
“Liar!”
“I’m Shenghao’s deputy general manager. Would I covet that pocket change?”
“Keep slandering me and I’ll sue!”
The onlookers shook their heads as the pair tore into each other.
Clutching his chest in fury, the chairman shouted:
“Enough!”
“You hired her, Zhao Gang. You dare say you knew nothing?”
Zhao Gang dropped to his knees.
“Brother-in-law! Believe me!”
“I really didn’t know she’d be so bold!”
“I’ll have my wife discipline her properly!”
So he was the chairman’s brother-in-law. No wonder he acted as though he owned Shenghao.
I sneered.
“Good performance, Deputy Manager Zhao.”
“Unfortunately, your cousin isn’t very reliable. She left you a little something.”
I took out my phone and connected it to the lobby’s Bluetooth speakers.
At full volume, I played an audio file.
Their voices rang through the hall.
“Gang, fifty thousand commission on every unit in this batch. We’ve made a fortune.”
Lin Tingting.
“Ha! And that’s not all. The chairman barely bothers with the company. Soon, we’ll be the ones running it.”
Zhao Gang’s sleazy voice.
When the recording ended, the lobby was silent.
Every eye fixed on them.
He looked ashen. She was too frightened even to cry.
The chairman stared at him, eyes bloodshot.
“You bastard!”
“I treated you as family. You treated me like a fool!”
He rushed forward and kicked him hard.
Zhao Gang screamed.
“I was wrong! I lost my head! Lin Tingting put me up to it!”
He spun toward her and seized her throat.
“You jinx! I’ll strangle you!”
She fought back, raking his face with long nails.
“Bastard! All the money’s in your account, and you leave me to take the blame!”
They grappled furiously on the floor.
His suit tore. Blood marked his face.
A handful of her hair was ripped out, her clothes torn until they barely covered her.
Clients watched in disgust.
A wealthy executive stepped forward.
“Shenghao has certainly opened our eyes.”
“Chaotic management, a deputy manager taking kickbacks, and now this scandal.”
“If your water is poisoned today, will your projects be poisoned tomorrow?”
Others agreed.
“How can we trust a company like this?”
