Chapter 1
Edward Quan ·
Only after I got pregnant did the System tell me I’d seduced the wrong man.
While it spiraled into a screaming meltdown, I calmly stroked my belly.
“Relax. It’s not a big problem.”
I was a rabbit spirit. I had two uteruses.
I could carry two different men’s children at the same time.
Later, in a dark, silent room, the crown prince of high society and its famously devout Buddhist boxed me in from front and back.
“Sweetheart, whose baby is it?”
Their dangerous breath burned against my ears. Guiltily, I swallowed.
“The answer... might surprise you a little...”
1
“Stop crying.”
After listening to the System wail in my ear for half the day, I tried to comfort it.
“I only seduced the wrong man. It’s not that serious.”
It would have been better if I’d said nothing.
My reassurance sent it into an even worse collapse.
【Not serious? You’re pregnant! How is that not serious?!】
It writhed miserably, shrieking.
【What do we do?! I’ve ranked dead last in the HXT48 Good System rankings for three years straight. I couldn’t afford an energy top-up, so I had to hibernate. I wake up and discover you’ve seduced the wrong target! This miserable System life... They’re definitely going to strike me off the register...】
“Strike you off? It’s that bad?”
I crunched on a carrot.
“If it’s the wrong man, we’ll switch. I’m only carrying one baby. The other uterus is still vacant.”
【?!】
The System’s eyes bulged.
【What? You have two uteruses?!】
“Of course. I’m a rabbit spirit. Two independent uteruses.”
I glanced at it.
“No wonder you always come last. You don’t even check your host’s condition before binding yourself to her.”
Three years earlier, I had just learned to take human form when the System bound itself to me.
It said this world was a melodramatic romance novel called The Pregnant Canary Runs Away: Young Master Shen, Stop Tormenting Her.
Complete the “pregnant runaway” mission, and I would receive a hundred million.
The target, naturally, was the “Young Master Shen” in the title.
I’d heard long ago that money was hard to earn in human society.
Ox spirits, horse spirits... They worked so hard to become human, only to spend their lives working like animals.
Worse than being an animal in the first place.
This little bunny was never going to pick a fight with money.
Collect a hundred million, ditch the father, keep the baby. What could be better?
I rubbed my rabbit paws together and got straight to work.
Who knew the Shen family had two young masters?
One was the father of the baby I was carrying: high society’s crown prince, Shen Guannan.
His younger brother was my actual target.
High society’s devout Buddhist, Shen Yeqing.
2
“Yingying, didn’t you say you had something important to tell me?”
Shen Guannan’s voice brought me back.
I’d called him home early to announce the pregnancy.
Honestly, he treated me very well.
Rich, generous, patient, gentle. Wonderful in every respect.
Unfortunately, our social positions were worlds apart.
His family had already arranged a suitable marriage. The baby in my belly was decidedly surplus to requirements.
Originally, I’d planned to wait for him to tell me to end the pregnancy. Then I could become “utterly disillusioned” and run away with his child.
But now?
He wasn’t even my target. Why keep acting for him?
Quietly, I slipped the positive pregnancy test into my pocket. My eyes shifted, and I wilted into his arms.
“Guannan, I think I’m ill...”
“Ill? Where does it hurt?”
His broad arms wrapped around me. He was so warm.
And smelled so good.
That chest. That face.
I wanted to take a bite.
【Control yourself, Host!】
The System shrieked inside my head.
【One more bite and the other uterus will be occupied too! We don’t have much time!】
Reason dragged me back.
Reluctantly, I swallowed.
“Guannan, it hurts in here... The news says you and Miss Di are a perfect match. Your families are arranging a marriage. What does that make me?”
I looked up, tears slipping down my face.
“Guannan... will you still marry me?”
His concern turned cold at once.
For five years, he had spoiled me.
But there was one line I could not cross.
His marriage.
A man like him would naturally marry a young lady from a family equal to his own.
I was merely a kept canary. I should know my place.
Today, I had crossed the line.
“You called me home just to ask that?”
He let me go, his lips tightening.
That was how he looked when displeased.
Usually, he gave me a “small punishment” at such times.
Today was no exception.
“There’s work at the company. I won’t be back for a few days. If you’re bored, find something to do. Don’t overthink things.”
He rose, leaving me his cold retreating back.
The moment the door shut, my tears stopped.
“Shen Guannan won’t bother me for a few days. System, find out where the Buddhist lives. We’re going man-hunting!”
【Sis, your acting is incredible!】
The excited System immediately promoted me to a more respectful form of address.
【Qingcheng Temple! Let’s go, let’s go!】
3
On the stone steps outside Qingcheng Temple, I arranged myself in the perfect fainting pose.
My makeup made me look delicately ill. My hair was artfully disheveled.
The System counted down nervously.
【Sis, get ready. Shen Yeqing will be here in one minute!】
I hurriedly shut my eyes and summoned the right emotions.
A minute later, a faint sandalwood fragrance approached.
The System supplied live commentary in my head.
【He’s here! Walking over, turning his prayer beads!】
【He’s looking down at you. A flicker of surprise in those cool eyes. He seems about to help you up, but he’s hesitating.】
【He’s reaching to check your pulse!】
I snapped alert.
If he could read pulses, wouldn’t he discover I was pregnant?
How would I manage a second baby then?
Before his fingers reached my wrist, I opened my eyes and threw my arms around him.
“Husband!” I cried.
His long lashes trembled. He stopped.
“What did you call me?”
“Husband!”
The word came easily. I pretended to get up, then clutched my head.
“My head hurts... Why am I here? I don’t seem to remember anything except you...”
I gazed up at him, eyes shining.
Shen Guannan had said he loved my eyes best. Clear as water.
Brothers ought to have similar tastes, right?
How could he resist?
But Shen Yeqing turned away, his voice cool as jade.
“Please don’t joke. I’ve entered religious life. How could I have a wife?”
I sighed and took his hand.
“Don’t say that, Husband. I understand.”
I patted his hand gently.
He reacted as though burned. His gaze wavered, but he did not pull away.
“What do you understand?”
