Chapter 4
Edward Quan ·
He clenched the note in his hand until his palm went numb.
At last, he panicked. He pulled out his phone and called Su Su.
“Give the phone to Lu Sining. What does she mean by this?”
“Tell her to come and explain it to me herself.”
The person on the other end gave a cold laugh.
“Didn’t Miss Lu make herself perfectly clear? She wants to break up with you.”
Chapter 6
“Lu Sining is still lying to me. She told you to test me, didn’t she?”
“Tell her to stop playing this boring game with me.”
Su Su answered without any courtesy.
“Stop imagining things. Miss Lu already boarded a plane to Italy.”
As she spoke, her voice grew urgent.
“This is your fault. Miss Lu could have left happily, but before she went, someone smashed all her work.”
“Zhou Shiyan, you don’t deserve her.”
Zhou Shiyan nearly dropped his phone.
“She—she went abroad?”
“I didn’t give her permission. Who said she could leave?”
Zhou Shiyan hurriedly called his assistant over.
“Find out whether Lu Sining really went abroad and what time her flight was.”
“Find out! I want every detail.”
He braced his hands on his knees and collapsed onto the sofa. Su Su’s words rang through his ears again and again.
“When you deliberately bought a ring in the wrong size and got her hopes up, did Miss Lu say anything?”
“When Xia Weiyuan broke the piece Miss Lu cared about most, did you stand up for her?”
“When Xia Sheng came to the studio and smashed five years of her work, did you help her get justice?”
“If you couldn’t do any of that, what right do you have to say she can’t leave?”
The assistant’s voice interrupted his thoughts.
“Mr. Zhou, Miss Lu took an early-morning flight to Italy. She really has left.”
The words sounded like a death sentence.
Something in Zhou Shiyan’s mind snapped.
Just then, Xia Weiyuan pushed the door open.
“Shiyan, didn’t you say you were going back to the company? Why are you here?”
Zhou Shiyan stared at her blankly.
“What are you doing here?”
They looked at each other. Xia Weiyuan spoke first.
“Sining called me. She said she’d left something for me.”
“I know the password to your place, anyway, so I let myself in.”
She found a pile of things on the table and cried out in surprise.
“These are all the gifts I gave her. Why did she put them all in here?”
Then she seemed to remember something, and her voice turned aggrieved.
“If Sining was mad, she could have told me directly. Why play these games?”
Normally, Zhou Shiyan couldn’t stand seeing Xia Weiyuan suffer even the slightest grievance.
She’d already suffered enough from secretly dating him.
That was why, between Xia Weiyuan and Lu Sining, he’d always put Xia Weiyuan first.
But today, something seemed lodged in his chest.
It wouldn’t come out. It pressed into his organs, making them ache.
“All right. Take your things and leave.”
Xia Weiyuan’s face stiffened.
“What do you mean? You’re kicking me out?”
She was a woman he’d spoiled for years. Seeing her eyes redden, Zhou Shiyan suppressed his irritation.
“Lu Sining went to Italy. I have to go after her.”
“Your leg will be better soon. Don’t come looking for me over the next few days unless it’s important.”
Xia Weiyuan stood frozen, her expression changing several times.
“Shiyan, what if this is just Sining’s way of provoking you? Maybe she went to Italy to make you chase after her.”
Zhou Shiyan’s brow tightened. He gave her a warning look.
“You’re crossing a line.”
“I might take your side once or twice when it’s between you and Sining, but you don’t get to stop me.”
Xia Weiyuan knew better than to say anything else.
Zhou Shiyan had his assistant book the earliest flight, and boarded that very evening.
Chapter 7
I’d just landed and settled into my place in Italy when Zhou Shiyan called.
I rejected the call, but the phone rang again.
“Zhou Shiyan, I’ve already made myself clear.”
His voice came through, frantic with impatience.
“You think leaving a torn piece of paper means you’ve broken up with me? I don’t accept it.”
I suddenly found it ridiculous.
“Zhou Shiyan, when you were secretly seeing Xia Weiyuan, did you ever ask whether I agreed?”
Silence on the other end.
I continued.
“If that’s how it is, what gives you the right to make demands of me?”
After a long while, he asked,
“Si Ning, when did you find out?”
“The moment you said you’d deliberately ordered the ring one size too small. I was standing right behind the curtain.”
Zhou Shiyan’s tone turned anxious.
“I’m sorry. I hurt you.”
I blinked, realizing that not even a ripple stirred inside me.
“You don’t need to. Let’s end things peacefully.”
I was about to hang up when Zhou Shiyan hurriedly spoke again.
