The Wedding Dress Left Behind on the Bridge

Chapter 7

Edward Quan ·

My mother tried to drape the scarf around my neck, but she was crying so hard she couldn’t lift her hands.

“Xiao Xin, you used to say that after you got married, you’d have me knit another scarf for your child. If things with Xu Qi hadn’t happened, you and Sinian would probably already have had a child, wouldn’t you?”

My father looked at my cool expression and lowered his head for the first time.

“I was wrong. Don’t be angry anymore. Can we go home? I truly can’t bear to see you suffer here.”

I looked at the scarf and shook my head.

“I’m not staying here because I’m angry. When you chose to help Xu Qi, you should have thought about how this would end.”

“When I left Lin City, I stopped thinking of you as my parents.”

Their lips moved, but they couldn’t say anything.

In the end, they had no choice but to support each other as they left.

Their retreating figures seemed to carry endless sorrow.

The concrete road from the company to the worksite had finally been repaired. On its opening day, Fu Sinian stayed there from beginning to end.

During those months, my brother had already left the Northwest, but Fu Sinian remained.

The yellow sand and wind had made him much thinner. The clothes that once fit him now hung several sizes too loose.

He stood in the wind as if it might carry him away at any moment.

He called my name again and again, trying to speak with me.

But I acted as if I couldn’t see him and kept walking with my notebook in my arms.

Beneath the streetlight, Fu Sinian’s shadow stretched long. I heard his choked voice.

“The Northwest wind is strong. Dress warmly. And even if there are streetlights, don’t go out to record data at night.”

“Xiao Xin, your stomach has always been bad. I left the stomach medicine in your desk drawer. I canceled the wedding. I don’t want a wedding without a bride.”

“If Xu Qi hadn’t been there from the beginning, would we have ended up like this? Xiao Xin, I regret it…”

I paused for a moment.

“Fu Sinian, we should both move on. You and I are over.”

Then I kept walking, without looking back.
