The Summer of Three

Chapter 7

Edward Quan ·

The fool stared at the biggest piece, too. He swallowed, a gulp sounding in his throat.

I said, “Rock, scissors, paper. The winner gets to choose first.”

Niem Niem played paper.

Hoang Viet played rock.

I played scissors.

“I win!”

Then I snatched up the biggest piece of watermelon as fast as I could.

Niem Niem’s mouth turned down.

I laughed and held the piece out to her.

“I tricked you. You take the big one.”

She froze for half a second, then laughed, too.

She held the watermelon in both hands, as if it were a bowl of water.

She bent down and took a bite. Juice ran down her wrist.

Hoang Viet watched her cute little face and chuckled beside her.

I gave the medium piece to him.

He took it, squatted right there, and silently began to eat.

The three of us sat on the threshold.

Our knees touching, we ate the whole watermelon.

At the end,

the fool put the rind on his head like a hat and chased Niem Niem around the courtyard.

She ran, shouting, “Dummy! Dummy!”

That summer seemed endless.

I sat on the threshold and watched them, thinking it would always be this way.
