Chapter 4
Edward Quan ·
The young woman in the footage was me.
In the video, I crouched down to speak to the boy.
Then I took his hand and led him to the security desk.
When I couldn’t find a guard, I used my phone to call the police.
The whole sequence was clear as day. There was no denying it.
Lu Wanning’s face turned pale.
“No… That’s not what happened…”
Gu Mingzhe looked at her.
“You just said you never went to Wanhe.”
“Zhe, I…”
“Then who is that in the video?”
Lu Wanning trembled.
After a long while, she suddenly pointed straight at me.
“It’s her!”
I jumped.
Me again?!
“She must have colluded with someone! There’s something wrong with that video!”
I was so angry I laughed.
“Ma’am, don’t you hear how ridiculous that sounds?”
She glared at me.
I pointed at the screen.
“The camera caught your face so clearly, and you’re still saying there’s something wrong with it?”
“Shut up!”
“You shut up! I’ve already lost my job over this, and now you want to pin the blame on me too?”
Lu Wanning sneered.
“You said you lost your job? That only proves you’re short on money!”
I was speechless.
She really was a genius.
Every word I said, she could twist into evidence against me.
Just then, the older officer’s phone rang.
He answered it.
His expression changed immediately.
“What?”
“All right. Understood.”
After hanging up, he looked straight at Lu Wanning.
“Ms. Lu, we’ve just received information from the hospital.”
“Someone used a power of attorney in your name to request that patient Xia Siyu be transferred out of intensive care.”
Gu Mingzhe whipped around.
Xia Siyu.
That was his wife.
And Baozi’s biological mother.
The officer continued:
“But the family member’s signature on the documents appears suspicious.”
“And the time the transfer was requested…”
He glanced at his watch.
“Was ten minutes after you left the child at the shopping mall.”
Lu Wanning stepped backward.
Gu Mingzhe looked at her, his gaze icy.
“Where were you planning to take Siyu?”
Lu Wanning shook her head, trembling.
“I don’t know…”
“Zhe, I really don’t know…”
“I only wanted to help her!”
Standing beside them, I got goosebumps listening to this.
A child deliberately abandoned.
An unconscious mother about to be transferred using suspicious paperwork.
A woman who kept lying.
I suddenly realized that I had stumbled into something far bigger than I’d imagined.
But I still didn’t know—
The scariest part was yet to come.
Chapter 4: My Dad Saw the Video and Wanted to Disown Me
After taking statements, the police confirmed that I had nothing to do with the boy’s disappearance.
Lu Wanning was taken to the station for further questioning about the circumstances.
Gu Mingzhe held his son and bowed his head to thank me.
“Ms. Song, thank you so much for today.”
I hurriedly waved my hands.
“It’s nothing, it’s nothing. Just be careful with your son next time.”
After saying that, I suddenly felt the sentence sounded a little strange.
Sure enough, Gu Mingzhe paused.
I immediately added:
“I mean, don’t let anyone take him away again. I’m not saying you should guard him like an object!”
He fell silent.
I grew even more flustered.
“That’s not right! Children aren’t objects! Though you should still keep a close eye on them… No, I…”
The older officer beside us suddenly spoke up.
“Ms. Song.”
I turned around.
He looked at me with sympathy.
“You don’t need to say anything else.”
I immediately shut my mouth.
Gu Mingzhe handed me a business card.
“If you ever need help, you can contact me.”
I looked at the card.
Gu Mingzhe. President of Tiansheng Group.
I froze.
Tiansheng?
Tiansheng Group?
Wasn’t that the company where I was supposed to report for work?
I raised my head, trembling.
“You… You’re the president of Tiansheng?”
He nodded.
I immediately felt the world spinning around me.
It was over.
I hadn’t just made the police mistake me for a criminal.
I’d also nearly made the president of my new company pay twenty million in ransom!
I asked weakly:
“President Gu, could I ask you a favor?”
“Go ahead.”
“Could you please not tell Human Resources about what happened today?”
He looked a little surprised.
“Why?”
I lowered my head, my voice barely audible.
“Because today is my first day at your company.”
Gu Mingzhe: “…”
The officer: “…”
I continued:
“And I’m already more than an hour late.”
The silence dragged on.
Then Gu Mingzhe suddenly laughed.
It was the first time I had seen him smile since he arrived.
“Don’t worry.”
He said:
“What happened today won’t affect your job.”
I was overjoyed.
“Really?”
“Really.”
“Then will I still get my attendance bonus?”
He gave me an indescribable look.
“Yes.”
I immediately felt as if I had come back to life a second time.
Rich people really were something else!
Generous and reasonable!
I thanked him happily and left.
Before getting into a taxi, I borrowed a power bank and switched on my phone.
As soon as it started up, dozens of messages appeared.
I thought about it for a moment.
Then I decided to share today’s achievement in the family group chat.
After all, I’d just done a good deed.
And the president himself had thanked me.
Wasn’t that something to be proud of?
I sent a photo of myself with the police.
Along with this message:
“Hey, everyone! Today I found a rich family’s kid. His dad offered me twenty million, but I turned it down! The police even sent a tactical team, and in the end the president had to come deal with it personally. Aren’t I amazing?”
The moment I sent it—
The quiet family group chat exploded.
My mom:
“WHAT DID YOU JUST DO?”
My dad:
“SONG RUOXI! WHERE ARE YOU?”
Uncle:
“Oh my God! Twenty million in ransom?”
Another uncle:
“Does anyone in the family know a lawyer?”
My cousin:
“Cousin, you’re in the news!”
I was stunned.
The news?
What news?
My cousin immediately sent me a link.
I tapped it.
The headline slammed into view:
“PRESIDENT OF MAJOR CORPORATION’S SON SUSPECTED KIDNAPPED; POLICE CORDON OFF SHOPPING MALL, SUSPECT IS A YOUNG WOMAN.”
Below it was a photo of me holding a sausage.
The angle was so unfortunate that I looked as though I were threatening the child with it.
