Chapter 13
Edward Quan ·
“You had all the winning cards in your hand. Why did you let them run wild for six months?”
“If you’d acted earlier, they never would have had a chance to cause trouble.”
I set down my teacup and watched a white butterfly drift through the courtyard.
Sunlight fell on its delicate, cicada-wing-thin wings, making it look fragile and beautiful.
“Zhu Jingnian, do you know how a mousetrap works?”
I turned to look at him.
“If you put only a few crumbs on a trap, the mouse might eat them and run away.”
“You have to put its favorite big piece of cheese on the trap.”
“Then let it stare at the cheese for a long time, until it’s so hungry its eyes light up.”
I smiled faintly, my voice as calm as if I were talking about the weather.
“Only then will it throw caution to the wind and rush in, never noticing its neck is caught in the trap.”
“Han Xu and Xiao were those two starving mice.”
I leaned back in my wicker chair, closed my eyes, and felt the early-summer breeze.
“Now the mice have been cleared out.”
I murmured,
“At last, I can quietly drink new tea and watch butterflies again.”
