Three Years Hidden Away

Chapter 6

Edward Quan ·

I remembered the foolish things I had done. To avoid harming his career, I had pulled out my own IV and slipped home to cook his late-night meal.

I had lowered myself to the dust.

The detective pressed play on his phone.

My final voice memo played.

“Pei Chuan, the doctor says my heart might not make it through this winter.”

“I don’t dare tell you. I’m afraid you’ll think I’m a burden. Afraid you’ll send me away to avoid gossip.”

“I only want to ask… when no one’s there, could you hold me?”

“Just once.”

My voice in the recording was so weak it seemed it might stop at any moment.

Pei Chuan lunged forward and overturned the iron table.

He cried in anguish, tears and mucus smearing his face.

“I didn’t know… I really didn’t know she was so ill!”

“Why didn’t she tell me? If she had, how could I have left her alone?”

The detective coldly righted the table, his eyes full of contempt.

“You didn’t know? What were you doing every time she had an attack and clutched her chest in front of you?”

The question silenced Pei Chuan’s cries.

“Your so-called avoidance of gossip was just an excuse for extreme selfishness and a desire to control someone else’s life.”

“You enjoyed every sacrifice your secret girlfriend made, while clinging to the allure of being a single CEO.”

“Your pathetic vanity drove her into a corner.”

Pei Chuan curled up on the cold interrogation-room floor like a dog with its spine torn out.

He bit down on his wrist until it bled.

His desperate sobs penetrated even the thick soundproof door.

But they would never bring back that familiar “It’s okay.”

An officer entered with the newly completed fingerprint comparison.

The detective glanced at it. His eyes went cold.

He opened the next interrogation room, bringing the devastating truth that would shatter Pei Chuan completely…

The atmosphere next door was entirely different.

Bai Meng still wore her frail, pitiful expression.

Tears kept falling as she insisted she was merely a new employee who had made an accidental mistake.

“Officer, I really didn’t know that white bottle was so important.”

“I was jealous because Ms. Ye kept using her seniority to target me. I just wanted to play a little joke.”

“How could I know she really had heart disease? I thought it was chewing gum.”

The detective gave a cold laugh without answering.

Instead, he slapped a transfer record and a private investigator’s report against her face.

“Stop acting.”

“These records show you investigated Ye Tingxue’s secret relationship with Pei Chuan six months ago.”

“You also paid a large sum for her detailed medical records on the black market.”

“You knew perfectly well she couldn’t last ten minutes after an attack without her fast-acting heart medication.”

Watching through the one-way glass, Pei Chuan pounded his fists against it.

His bloodshot eyes widened. His breathing quickened.

He finally understood this hadn’t been an accidental fight for affection in the workplace.

It was a vicious murder planned long in advance.

Faced with the evidence, Bai Meng’s innocent expression vanished.

She dropped her hypocritical mask, leaned back, and laughed wildly.

“Yes. I knew long ago.”

“An old woman with no backing who only knows how to bow and scrape—why should she get to be the CEO’s wife?”

“She didn’t even dare ask for public recognition. Pei Chuan ordered her around like a dog. She was a joke from beginning to end!”

Her eyes turned malicious. She recounted her plan without restraint.

“I was the one who suggested the high-speed train for that company trip.”

“I pretended to be motion-sick to get the bag with her medication.”

“I knew exactly how much Pei Chuan cared about appearances. He would never favor Ye Tingxue in front of his employees.”

“A few little provocations, and his ridiculous idea of fairness would drive her to death with his own hands.”

I listened to every calculated word without a ripple of feeling.

Only profound sadness.

The relationship I had guarded so carefully for three years had fallen apart over a few words from someone else.

In Pei Chuan’s heart, I really was worth less than a little pride.

“I never meant to kill her with my own hands.”
