Synopsis

My coastal clan has one unbreakable rule: on the first full-moon night after a Tide Guide marries, the person dearest to her must feed her a life pearl. Without one, she will become a mermaid within seven days and never return to land. I am the only Tide Guide of my generation. Before she died, my mother entrusted three life pearls to my husband, my brother, and my childhood friend. One of them only had to remember me, and I would be saved. But on the night the tide rose, they fed all three pearls to another girl—the frail college student my husband had sponsored. As the water climbed around my legs and silver-blue scales spread across my skin, they dismissed my clan’s rule as superstition. If no one on land loved me anymore, I would return to the deep sea.
