The Sea King's Youngest Daughter

Chapter 7

Edward Quan ·

Father turned the clan's ancient texts upside down before finally finding a record of what I was.

Mermaids weren't the weakest of the sea folk.

Mermaids were the voice of the tides.

My brothers and sisters guarded the ocean's territory.

I guarded its breath.

Humans and the sea folk signed a new coastal convention.

They wanted me to serve as an envoy between our peoples.

Father refused on the spot.

"No."

My eldest brother shook his head too.

"It's dangerous out there."

My second sister slammed all eight tentacles onto the table.

"Who dares make our little sister work?"

My third brother was more direct.

"Can you eat an envoy?"

I'd had enough.

One sweep of my tail sent the conference table flying.

"I'm going to a meeting!"

"Not into a soup pot!"

The whole family fell silent.

Three seconds later, Father quietly arranged an escort of three thousand guards.

I looked at the mass of deep-sea beasts outside the palace and suddenly thought Gu Mingzhu had been right about one thing.

However many came, she'd catch them all.

Unfortunately, she hadn't caught a single one.

A year later, I became the first Envoy of the Tides between our two peoples.

I still had no interest in cultivating my powers.

My favorite pastime was still sprawling on a coral reef in the sun.

Now and then, a poaching vessel would stray into the forbidden waters.

I couldn't even be bothered to flick my tail.

All I had to do was open my mouth and call softly.

A moment later, Father, Mother, my brothers and sisters, and tens of thousands of sea beasts would appear at once.

Eventually, a saying spread across the ocean.

Meeting a mermaid wasn't the frightening part.

Letting her go home and tell on you was.

I rolled over and went back to sunbathing.

What was so bad about being a lazy fish?

My job was to look pretty.

The family handled swallowing ships and wrecking houses.
