The NPC with Three Lines

Chapter 3

I paused, then raised my head with a perfectly practiced smile.

"Is there anything else you require, young master?"

I hurried over.

Song Zhiyue looked at me.

"You said the same thing to the woman I brought home before, didn't you?"

I froze.

Oh, shit.

Was I about to lose another job?

Hadn't Dad said all our family had to do was repeat those three lines every day?

Be a good, emotionless NPC?

Why did this CEO have so many questions?

I smiled without changing expression.

"You must be mistaken, young master."

His slender fingers tapped the table.

"You were the one at Song Hancheng's house that day, too, weren't you?"

"What was it you said? I was the first man your CEO had ever brought home?"

He suddenly seemed intrigued.

"How many men has that brat brought home?"

"I knew it. Single all this time? There had to be something going on with his sexuality."

I secretly rolled my eyes.

As if you're so normal yourself. Fast AND rude. Quite the CEO.

My face betrayed nothing.

"That was my first day."

His expression faltered.

"And then you got fired?"

I nodded, full of indignation.

Dad had even called me a disgrace to our butler clan!

Looking slightly guilty, Song Zhiyue waved a hand.

"Just do your job properly here from now on."

The next morning, he sat pale-faced in the living room.

I'd noticed him early.

I knew what this was. A standard CEO-romance feature: stomach trouble.

I stood waiting for Jiang Chi to appear.

"The young master's stomach trouble is acting up again" had already made several circuits around my mouth.

Still no Jiang Chi.

Sweat covered Song Zhiyue's forehead. At last, unable to bear it, he looked at me through gritted teeth.

"Lin Beibei. Get my stomach medicine!"

I glanced upstairs in exasperation.

Oversleeping on her very first day!

By the time I'd searched the villa and found the medicine, he'd passed out from the pain.

I hurriedly called the family doctor.

A handsome young man arrived.

The CEO's close friend. Some sort of famous doctor.

Famous for what, I didn't know.

Just the impressive kind.

As soon as Song Zhiyue woke, Dr. Fu Han frowned at him.

"How many times have I told you to look after yourself?"

Song Zhiyue waved it off.

"An old problem."

Then his cold gaze swept over me.

"Come here."

I approached slowly.

His expression made my heart sink.

Was he firing me again?

If I got dismissed this time, our entire old-butler clan would lose face.

My mind raced.

I lunged forward and clasped his hand.

"Young master, is your stomach trouble acting up again?"

"Your humble servant will pay much closer attention to your stomach from now on!"

His mouth opened.

Before he could speak, a tear-streaked face appeared in the doorway.

She rushed over and bumped me aside with her hip, biting her lower lip with red-rimmed eyes.

"Mr. Song..."

"It's my fault. I didn't look after you."

I stood to one side and rolled my eyes.

If you hadn't overslept, would he be in the hospital now?

Jiang Chi gazed at him tenderly, her sweet little face full of guilt.

"It's all my fault. I couldn't sleep in an unfamiliar bed. That's why I got up late."

A touch of hope mingled with her remorse as she blinked at him.

"You're not angry with me, are you?"

Bullshit!

I'd walked past her room last night and heard snoring like an ox bellowing!

At ten, the noise in the villa had startled me. I'd thought a water buffalo had got in.

Following it upstairs, I found her sleeping like a dead pig.

Who would believe the dainty little flower on the outside was a great hulking brute within?

I nodded helpfully.

"Don't blame yourself, Ms. Jiang. The young master isn't petty."

Her face brightened. She looked at him weakly.

"Really, Mr. Song?"

He looked at me, then at her.

As though he'd swallowed something foul.

Rubbing his forehead, he said, "Yes."

Surveying this harmonious scene between CEO and little wife, I beamed with delight.

I gazed fondly at Jiang Chi.

You little brat. I wouldn't be so indulgent next time!

The CEO's precious little wife had arrived.

Time for the butler to withdraw.

I went out.

Jiang Chi followed.

The moment she was outside, she started rolling her eyes.

Halfway through, she saw me in the corridor and froze.

Eventually, she looked at me awkwardly and muttered, "Why is my eye twitching?"

Then, as though she'd only just noticed me, she said shyly, "Butler? Why are you here?"

My standard smile returned.

"I was just leaving."

As if I'd had time!

I'd barely put one foot outside before she'd come out on my heels.
