Chapter 4

But as soon as he entered the garage, he saw a large crowd.
His heart sank. Instinctively, he went over.
A huge pool of dark red blood lay on the floor.
Neighbors murmured around it.
“I saw it in the group. That’s the crooked businesswoman online whose cheap, fake products caused a miscarriage. The family came to take revenge!”
“So much blood. Surely her baby didn’t survive?”
“Serves her right. Whatever sins a mother commits, her child pays for them!”
The property manager turned and saw Jin’an. His expression changed, and he hurried over to apologize.
“Mr. Lu, I’m sorry. Our security wasn’t strict enough. Please be assured that I’ve ordered the staff to be retrained. This won’t happen again.”
Then he asked cautiously, “Your wife and the baby… are they all right?”
Jin’an turned sharply.
“Who did you say was attacked?”
The manager was surprised.
“You don’t know?”
“We checked the surveillance footage. It was your wife.”
It was as though thunder had exploded in Jin’an’s head.
His voice began to tremble.
“Which hospital is she in?”
The manager opened his mouth, unable to answer.
“The footage shows no ambulance came. A man took her away. We have no information on him.”
Seeing Jin’an’s expression worsen, he quickly added, “We’ll check again immediately. We’ll find your wife as quickly as possible!”
He turned and left.
With shaking hands, Jin’an took out his phone and called Chunian again.
Impossible.
It couldn’t be her.
There had to be some mistake.

Jin’an searched for a long time.
But Chunian seemed to have vanished from the world.
However hard he searched, he found no trace.
He spent his days distraught, unable to stop thinking about the call she’d made during the attack.
She had placed all her hope in him.
He hadn’t merely disbelieved her.
He had insisted she was doing it to compete with Yunshu for attention.
Thinking of her despair, and of the blood on the floor, he felt as though an axe had split his heart in two. The pain made him tremble.
Then a call came.
The man who had attacked her had been found.
Jin’an rushed to the police station.
The man looked at him coldly, without remorse.
“Yes, I hit her. So what?”
“My child is dead. That heartless crook’s child can die with mine!”
Jin’an clenched his fists until his knuckles cracked.
Seeing him, the man suddenly laughed.
“She lost so much blood. That baby’s definitely gone!”
Jin’an lunged at him in fury.
The police held him back and told him to calm down.
“We’ll expedite the investigation. We’ll also find your wife as soon as we can.”
He closed his eyes and regained control.
After thanking the officers, he left the station.
Outside, he remembered Chunian’s plea for help.
She’d said the batch had nothing to do with her. Yunshu and Lin Qian were responsible.
At the time, he’d thought she was lying to compete for his attention.
But what if she hadn’t lied?
He didn’t dare follow the thought further.
He drove to the studio.
Its outer walls were covered in red spray paint. Inside, everything had been smashed.
His heart grew heavy as he opened the door.
The employees had all gone home.
Only Chunian’s former assistant, Li, remained, packing her things.
Seeing him, she looked away with a sour expression and pretended he wasn’t there.
He approached.
“Li, do you know where Chunian went?”
The question seemed to set her off.
She glared at him.
“I wish I did!”
“Niannian is pregnant. Her best friend, husband, and sister all betrayed her. They took back the studio she’d poured her heart into, then smeared her name. I can’t imagine how desperate she must feel.”
Her voice broke.
Jin’an frowned.
“What do you mean, took back the studio?”
Li stared at him sarcastically.
“Mr. Lu, don’t pretend you don’t know.”
